2boysdad a.k.a. Steve K.

Hi! I've been reading this board for months, and I just love it! I rescued a 2 yr. old golden retriever who was very anti-social, even though I tried to adopt or rescue other strays in the neighborhood. About 2 1/2 years ago, my neighbor called me saying she had a pup she found near her work parking lot; shivering, nearly de-gloved (skin ripped off of right rear leg) and severely emaciated (22 lbs.). We bandaged the poor boy up, I held him in my arms, told him "it's OK", picked the ticks and fleas off of him, and rushed him to Vet ER at 11 PM. She spent a bundle to get him back to health. She brings him home, and can't do a thing with him! Too wild! Tears up the rooms he's kept in! Her toy poodle can't stand him, and she's at wits end!  I go over to install a ceiling fan as a favor, and in the ensuing hour, do the "bow & play" and give him some lovin' - the boy goes nuts!

A week later, they decide he's too much to handle, and ask me to find him a home. I try for a week, with no luck, and they say they have to turn him over to the pound($#@*&**). I try to socialize him with the golden over a 2-3 day period, and the golden actually accepts him! The golden has become much more lively (although his kidneys are failing) and seems so much more happier to be part of a bigger pack. I couldn't figure out what kind of breed he was until I found your site and the related links. He's now a healthy 48 lbs. and stands as tall as the retriever (hence the name "legs"). The vet thought he may be a greyhound/terrier mix, but he obviously fits the whippet mix; whippets are not common in this area. He has all the characteristics (sleeps in a ball, is a bed hog, runs figure 8's through the house, loves to run on the shore of Lake Michigan- we live in Gary (Miller), IN, shoots 6 ft straight up in the air, chases prey silently - deer, squirrels, etc.), but is apparently not a purebred -

his nose is part pink, his tail rarely tucks (even though he finally started to wag it in happiness after watching his retriever brother), and learned to bark at strangers. He was completely white when he adopted us, but has developed some fawn patches. Legs just becomes more adorable and loving and well behaved every day. The boys have free run of the house while I'm away, and I haven't had a problem for a long time (cross fingers). I'm so glad he found a place he can be happy at home. The anti-social golden even cuddles with him once in a while. Thanks again for this wonderful web site! Will post some pictures when I get a scanner. Bless all dog rescuers.....Dog is my co-pilot.
