Fly a.k.a. Jeff Innocent
| I live in London with my two Whippets,Jack( Male,4 yrs old,fawn
brindle,21ins and 32lbs,I'm not sure what that is in American; and his son
Bob,Iyr old,fawn,30lbs and growing.) They are both considered big dogs in
England as the breed standard is smaller than in the States, you guys with
your making things BIGGER. Whippets are very much part of English history,
particularly in the industrial north during the early 20th century. They
were popular in coal mining towns where they were pets, used to catch rats,
raced on open ground, where without a lure they ran towards their owner
who stood at the finishing line snapping a rag. Hence they were often
refered to as 'snap dogs'. Another nice fact is that in poor working class
communities such as these, Whippets were used as hot water bottles, being
placed in the bottom of the children's bed to keep them warm during those
cold winter nights. In my experience Whippets get under duvets, without
encouragement, to keep themeselves warm. The topic I would like to raise
and one that I haven't seen debated anywhere, books or web-sites,is EAR
FLAPPING. Both my dogs flap their ears when.a, they want to wake me up.b,
when they are annoyed with me.c, when they are hungry. I feel this is a
parculiarly Whippet idiosyncracy? Your ear flapping sories please. Email: jeffinnocent@msn.com |
