Our Two Boys a.k.a. Sharon Curtis

We live in LaPorte, IN (north central Indiana, up by Lake Michigan) and got our first whippet, Rocky, 4 years ago through the Whippet Rescue Club. After much research about breed types, whippets seemed to fit the type of dog we were looking for. Little did we know we'd fall in love with the breed.

Rocky was about 6 1/2 years old when we got him (he's almost 11 years old now). He had been bought by his first owners for breeding purposes (apparently he had really good lines), but he escaped and once the humane society got him, they neutered him, and his owners wouldn't take him back. His next owners had him for several years, but they got divorced and he wound up in the humane society again (he has two Humane Society tattoos). The Whippet Rescue Club got him and he was matched with us. He is absolutely the best dog I've ever had!

We decided this fall to get another whippet. We were hoping it would keep Rocky "young" a bit longer by providing companionship and a playmate, and we thought it would be good for the younger dog to have an older, well-behaved role model. I contacted the breeders that had rescued Rocky for us, and they happened to have a 9-month-old male that they wanted to show, but his ears stand erect at attention rather than folding into a rosebud. They were very disappointed, as he's an exceptionally sweet dog (and they had bred his father, who died recently), but decided they should place him as a pet. Since they knew Rocky was doing well with us, we by-passed the 3-year waiting list for a puppy and got Zamboni only a month after I told them we wanted another whippet. Yay!

While Zamboni has gotten into his share of trouble in the last month, this board has shown me that he's absolutely normal for being an adolescent dog, and actually probably on the more well-behaved side of the spectrum. He and Rocky clicked immediately, and they're practically inseparable.

Whippets are such a terrific breed of dog! Their personalities are basically flawless (although they are huge food-grubbers, aren't they?), and they're absolutely beautiful!

Oh, and a little about us -- my husband is a college professor (biology) and although I have a degree in biological anthropology, I'm going back to school to get a degree in nursing. We have an 8-year-old son, a 2-year-old daughter, 2 black cats (Quickshadow and Storm), numerous fish, and a parakeet named Banshee.
